The Rivers International Film Festival (RIFF) is set to place Nigeria’s creative sector under the global spotlight once again as preparations gather momentum for its 2026 edition.
Scheduled to run from October 29 to November 1, 2026, on the historic Bonny Island in Rivers State, this year’s festival will explore the central theme, “Film Tourism: A Pathway to Economic Development.” The four-day event aims to demonstrate how cinema can serve as a catalyst for economic growth, youth empowerment, and cultural preservation.
A Global Cinematic Gathering
This year’s edition promises a robust itinerary designed to engage industry professionals, film enthusiasts, and international delegates. Out of an impressive 3,021 submissions received from 182 countries, a curated selection of 355 films will compete across various categories.

Masterclasses & Industry Panels: Capacity-building sessions led by seasoned professionals.
Networking Forums: Opportunities connecting local talents with international producers and distributors.

The strategic shift to focus on film tourism has drawn commendation from the Federal Government. Praising the initiative, the Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, highlighted the festival’s alignment with national goals.
“The Rivers State Government, backed by RIFF, encourages the use of film and art for cultural preservation and youth empowerment,” Musawa stated. “This vision supports our goal to position Nigeria as the cultural and creative hub of Africa, and Rivers State is taking a significant step in realizing that ambition.”
