A traditional ruler in Rivers State, Magnus Edooh, has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the boat mishap involving leaders of Kula Community in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, which reportedly claimed five lives.

Edooh, who is the Paramount Ruler of Ancient Dee-Eewa Village in Kwawa Community, Khana Local Government Area, also urged relevant authorities to strengthen waterway safety enforcement and ensure that those found responsible for the tragedy are held accountable.

In a statement, the monarch described the incident as another painful reminder of the dangers confronting residents who depend on waterways for transportation across the Niger Delta.

He called for an urgent investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the mishap and determine whether the actions or negligence of any individuals, companies or government agencies contributed to the loss of lives.

The traditional ruler also urged emergency agencies to complete all necessary search and recovery operations and provide appropriate support to the affected families.

He further called on maritime and safety authorities to inspect boats operating in the area and enforce safety regulations, including the use of life jackets, compliance with passenger limits and proper vessel maintenance.

Edooh stressed the need for improved waterway monitoring, emergency response systems and public awareness campaigns to prevent similar incidents.

The monarch, who is also the Executive Director of the Indigenous Language and Cultural Empowerment Foundation, ILACEF, commiserated with the traditional institution and people of Kula Community, as well as the immediate families of the victims.

He described the deaths as a significant loss not only to the affected families but also to community leadership, cultural heritage and the wider Niger Delta region.

Edooh maintained that the region’s contribution to Nigeria’s economy should not come at the expense of the safety and lives of its people.

He urged the relevant authorities to ensure that the tragedy does not end without answers, justice and concrete measures to prevent future occurrences.
