The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rivers State Chapter, has strongly condemned a directive by the Executive Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area restricting all public gatherings, describing the order as unconstitutional and an attempt to stifle opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday, July 26, 2026, by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Barr. Chizy Enyi, the ADC acknowledged the severe security challenges in Ikwerre LGA—including recent killings, kidnappings, and violent attacks—offering sympathy to the victims’ families and supporting lawful security measures.
However, the party insisted that insecurity must not be used as a pretext to violate the fundamental rights of citizens.
The ADC argued that freedom of assembly, association, and political participation are rights guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution and cannot be subjected to the personal discretion or approval of a local government chairman.
“Tackling insecurity should focus on identifying, arresting, and prosecuting criminals rather than imposing blanket restrictions on the constitutional freedoms of innocent citizens,” Enyi stated.
The party disclosed that its members in Ikwerre LGA have faced months of intimidation, threats, and disruptions of lawful political meetings, alleging that the new directive is designed to shut down legitimate political activities under the guise of security management. The ADC warned that allowing such an order to stand sets a dangerous precedent that could narrow the democratic space across other councils in Rivers State.
Consequently, the ADC demanded the immediate withdrawal of the executive order.
The party also called on the Rivers State Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to guarantee equal protection for all registered political parties, while appealing to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organizations, and democratic stakeholders to monitor actions threatening free political participation in the state.
Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful and law-abiding engagement, the ADC emphasized that protecting citizens’ safety and preserving constitutional democracy must be pursued simultaneously.
