Following an alarming surge in violent crimes, the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State, Hon. Charles Wobodo, has announced a blanket ban on all forms of public gatherings across the council area with immediate effect.
Delivering the directive during a live broadcast, Wobodo stated that the drastic measure became imperative to curb the rising wave of killings, abductions, and other criminal activities that have gripped the local government, leaving residents in perpetual fear and disrupting daily economic life.
Expressing deep sympathy with families who have lost loved ones to the recent violence, the council chairman assured the populace that his administration is fully committed to restoring peace and protecting lives and property in collaboration with security agencies.
Under the new security directive, all public gatherings within Ikwerre LGA are strictly prohibited. Exceptions will only be granted for genuine and compelling events, provided the organizers secure written permission from the council at least 72 hours in advance.
Wobodo issued a stern warning that violators of the ban—whether individuals or organizations—will face severe sanctions under the law.
“Any individual or organization found violating this directive will face appropriate sanctions,” Wobodo warned, while urging law-abiding citizens to remain calm and go about their legitimate activities as security forces step up patrols to restore normalcy.
