The Senate of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Port Harcourt, has expelled a final-year student, Onyewuenyi Chiamaka Nora, following a viral interview in which she allegedly claimed that her project supervisor wrote her research project for her.
The university announced the decision after its Senate meeting on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Ngozi Okiridu, Nora is a student of the Department of English Language and Literary Studies.
The institution said the expulsion was imposed over what it described as “damaging content creation” and was intended to deter similar conduct by other students. The university further stated that, during the interview, the student identified her project topic as “Citizenship,” which management said was not a recognised topic in her department.
It also said she claimed that her supervisor had written the project for her.
Questions Over Procedure and Proportionality
The decision has drawn public attention to the responsibilities of students when discussing academic matters publicly, particularly where statements involve lecturers, research supervision and institutional practices. The case has also raised questions about how universities balance institutional reputation, academic integrity, freedom of expression and fair disciplinary procedures.
Expulsion carries significant academic consequences, particularly for a final-year student. While universities have a responsibility to uphold academic standards, disciplinary decisions are generally expected to follow established regulations, including fair hearing and an opportunity for the student to defend herself.
The information contained in the published report does not provide a detailed account of any disciplinary hearing or the student’s response.
As of the available reports, IAUE’s position is that the expulsion was intended to serve as a deterrent. Whether the decision will face further review, or whether the student will issue a response, remains unclear.
