Varsity VC Dies 48 Hours After Taking Office

By Samuel Olusegun Precious

Tragedy hit Tansian University, Umunya, Anambra State, following the sudden death of its newly inaugurated substantive Vice-Chancellor, Professor Cater Dike Umeoduagu, barely 48 hours after assuming office.

Prof. Umeoduagu was formally sworn in as substantive VC on Thursday, October 1, 2026, marking the commencement of his tenure. However, he reportedly took ill on Saturday, October 3, 2026, and died in the middle of the night, sending shock waves through the university community.

Prof. Umeoduagu was no stranger to the private Christian institution founded by the late Msgr. Prof. John Bosco Akam. He was a Professor of Environmental Microbiology, former Head of Department of Microbiology, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), and had served as Acting VC before his substantive appointment.

He was also a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, representing Aguata I Constituency in the 7th Assembly. His death comes at a particularly sensitive time for Tansian University, which has been embroiled in leadership crisis including disputes surrounding the tenure of former VC, Prof. Eugene Okoye Nwadialor, who described his exit as a “palace coup” – a claim the management dismissed, insisting his tenure ended September 30.

Details of the circumstances surrounding his illness and death were not officially disclosed as at press time, and the university is yet to issue an official statement.

The university community, colleagues, family members and associates are expected to mourn the deceased academic, whose tenure ended almost as soon as it began.
