The winners of Sunday’s World Cup final between Argentina and Spain will receive championship rings, a major change from traditional soccer rewards.
Championship rings are a well-known tradition in American sports like football, where Super Bowl winners receive them. FIFA has ordered 30 official rings for the winning team. They will also sell 1,996 replica rings to fans. Each ring will feature a tiny World Cup trophy and a special message engraved inside.
U.S. President Donald Trump will attend the final at MetLife Stadium to hand over the World Cup trophy to the winning team. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed his attendance.
This will be the first game Trump attends at this tournament. He did not watch any of the previous 102 matches, including the U.S. team’s games before they were knocked out by Belgium in the round of 16.
Though New York is currently facing poor air quality due to smoke from Canadian wildfires, officials say the weather conditions will not affect the match.
