Wike Leads Fresh Appeasement Visit To Fubara In Port Harcourt

By Samuel Olusegun Precious

Ahead of the 2027 General Election, efforts to fully resolve the Rivers State political crisis continued on Sunday as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, led another delegation to Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The meeting, once again, was held at Fubara’s private residence in Port Harcourt on Sunday, October 19, 2026,  which was the second between both camps in two weeks.

FCT Minister Wike arrived at about 4:20 pm with Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, other members of the Assembly, the 23 Local Government chairmen, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 election, Hon. Kingsley Chinda.

According to sources familiar with the engagement, the closed-door meeting, which lasted for about two hours, was aimed at consolidating the ongoing reconciliation efforts and building on previous discussions.

It also marked the first time the FCT Minister visited Governor Fubara at his private residence since the political fallout between them in October 2023.The latest visit comes about two weeks after Wike led members of the Rainbow Coalition to meet with the governor as part of moves to forge a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

For the second time also, details of the discussions were not made public as both parties declined to speak to journalists after the meeting.

Analysts are divided over the recent overtures by the FCT minister after not only denying the sitting governor a  second term in office but denying all his supporters any positions ahead of the elections. All those perceived as sympathetic to the governor during the crisis were denied tickets in the ruling APC and PDP.

It is also suggested in some quarters that the current reconciliation moves by the FCT minister was to allow unrestricted access to the state covers- Rivers State is viewed as a cash cow to the politicians both at  the state and national level. The alleged looting that took place during the emergency rule attested to the fact.

“The governor is certainly unhappy with the turn of events, despite openly assuring the “Rainbow Coalition” of support. Deeply down he is unhappy,” a political analyst noted.
