Patrick Vieira has emerged as a leading contender to become the next head coach of Senegal following the dismissal of Pape Thiaw after the country’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign.
Despite entering the tournament as one of Africa’s strongest sides, Senegal failed to meet expectations. The Teranga Lions progressed to the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed teams but were eliminated in dramatic fashion in the Round of 32.
Senegal appeared on course for a famous victory against Belgium after racing into a two-goal lead. However, a late collapse saw the Europeans complete a stunning comeback to claim a 3-2 win, ending Senegal’s World Cup journey much earlier than anticipated.
The disappointing result prompted the Senegalese Football Federation to part ways with Thiaw and begin the search for a new manager capable of leading the team into its next chapter.
According to French outlet L’Equipe, Vieira is now the preferred candidate for the role. The former Arsenal captain has gained managerial experience with New York City FC in Major League Soccer, Crystal Palace in the Premier League, and most recently Genoa in Italy’s Serie A.
Although Vieira represented France throughout his illustrious playing career, he was born in Dakar, giving him a strong connection to Senegal. That link, combined with his growing coaching résumé, has strengthened his candidacy for the position.
If appointed, Vieira would embark on his first international coaching role, taking charge of one of Africa’s most talented national teams as they set their sights on future continental and global success.
