Nollywood has lost one of its biggest pillars.
Veteran actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, MFR, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His death was announced today, Tuesday, September 16, 2026, by his son Olusoji Jacobs in an Instagram post.
In the statement, the family wrote:
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo. Oludotun Baiyewun Jacobs (MFR) 11/07/1942 – 16/09/2026. We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our families privacy at this time.” 830f
A TRUE LEGEND
Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most prominent actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film in the UK and Nigeria. Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, RADA, in London, he began his career in British television before returning to become a major figure in Nollywood. 2407
He featured in over 120 films, including classics like The Dogs of War, Ashanti, Pirates, and was widely recognised for his commanding stage and screen presence.
He was honoured with the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) and the Lifetime Achievement Award at AFRIFF, and was awarded Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.
He is survived by his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, with whom he co-founded the Lufodo Group and Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, children and grandchildren. 6cdb
