The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has lifted its ban on student union activities, paving the way for the restoration of democratic student representation on campus.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Sammy Kpenu, disclosed that the decision to reinstate unionism followed extensive consultations with student leaders, university staff, and key internal stakeholders.
According to Dr. Kpenu, the reversal was made in the interest of fostering peace, inclusivity, and the overall welfare of the student body.
He clarified, however, that student union activities will operate under a newly established regulatory framework designed to ensure order, security, and responsible leadership across all campus campuses.
“The reinstatement of student union activities comes with guidelines aimed at maintaining decorum, safety, and mutual respect within the university community,” Dr. Kpenu stated.
The initial prohibition of union activities had drawn widespread criticism from the student body, triggering calls for constructive dialogue and the restoration of student governance.
Student leaders have warmly welcomed the management’s U-turn, hailing the resolution as a significant triumph for diplomatic engagement and student rights.
Meanwhile, university management has urged the entire student body to strictly abide by the new regulations as union operations resume.
