A glittering array of Nollywood stars, film crew, and distinguished guests gathered in Port Harcourt for the grand world premiere of Sweet Sixteen, a new musical drama shot entirely in Rivers State.
Produced by an indigenous production company, the film tells the story of a spoiled, wealthy teenage girl who is tricked into spending her summer vacation in her native village. In a notable cultural milestone, Sweet Sixteen features Ikwerre as the sole Nigerian language spoken throughout the production.
Veteran Nollywood actress Uche Jombo, one of the lead cast members, reflected on the intense preparation required for her role, particularly mastering the local dialect.
“It’s a beautiful production. A lot went into this film—it’s not just about the music, there is real storytelling,” Jombo shared. “Someone called me an Ikwerre woman, but I’m not; I learned on the job. I read my script in English, and they brought in a language coach who taught me how to use the dialect. The director had a clear vision and kept it all the way; everything on the mood board was implemented. It’s a one-of-a-kind production I am truly proud of.”
Director Willis Ikedum explained that the story was born out of a personal reflection on family and time.
“My eldest daughter is sixteen, and my second daughter will turn sixteen eight years from now,” Ikedum revealed. “So I looked at the future sixteen and my past sixteen, and merged the two ideas together.”
The ensemble cast features prominent entertainment figures, including Kalu Ikeagwu, Denrele Edun, Julius Agwu, Broda Shaggi, and Dan D’Humorous alongside Jombo.
Sweet Sixteen makes its official nationwide debut in cinemas today, August 14, 2026.
