The Rivers State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation following the fatal shooting of Anthony Obodo, an indigene of the Rundele community in the Emohua Local Government Area, by a police officer while in transit.
In an official statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing-Kaborlo, preliminary findings reveal that a heated altercation broke out between the victim and Corporal Alfred Louis. The verbal dispute quickly escalated into a physical scuffle, during which Cpl. Louis discharged his firearm.
Obodo died from the gunshot wounds, while two bystanders caught in the crossfire sustained varying degrees of injury.
Following the shooting, an enraged mob attacked and severely assaulted Cpl. Louis, leaving him with multiple injuries before police reinforcement intervened.
ASP Blessing-Kaborlo confirmed that Cpl. Louis and members of his operational team have been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The officers are currently undergoing interrogation and will face formal internal disciplinary proceedings subject to the outcome of the investigation.
The State Command strongly condemned the incident, describing the officer’s actions as a severe breach of professional standards.
“This unprovoked act does not reflect the professionalism expected of our officers,” the statement read. “The Command will not shield anyone engaged in unethical conduct that brings disrepute to the Nigeria Police Force. Strict disciplinary actions will be taken against any erring officers found culpable.”
Investigation into the matter remains ongoing.
