POLICE FIRE TEARGAS AT #ENDSARS MEMORIAL IN LEKKI

By Elvira Jordan

Police fired teargas on Tuesday morning to disperse residents, journalists and political figures gathered at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos for a memorial in honour of victims of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.

Among those affected were the African Democratic Congress governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress governorship candidate, Funso Doherty.

The memorial, organised by the Enough is Enough movement to commemorate those who lost their lives during the #EndSARS protests, was disrupted before participants could lay wreaths at the tollgate.

Police officers deployed to the venue fired tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd. A video shared by TheCable showed participants scrambling for safety as the tear gas spread across the area.

The memorial marked the anniversary of the 2020 EndSARS protests against police brutality. Organisers stated that the walk was a peaceful action to honor victims and demand justice, while police maintained that demonstrators who remained after 10am were causing a nuisance.
