In one of the most seismic rosters moves in modern NBA history, the Philadelphia 76ers officially unveiled LeBron James on Monday, confirming that the league’s all-time leading scorer will wear his iconic No. 23 jersey in the City of Brotherly Love.
To mark the historic acquisition, the franchise released an image showing James’ blue No. 23 jersey hanging in his locker beside a replica crown—a nod to his “King James” moniker.
The arrival of the four-time NBA MVP instantly reshapes the Eastern Conference landscape as Philadelphia seeks to end a 43-year championship drought.
“We’re thrilled that LeBron and his family have chosen Philadelphia for the next chapter of his remarkable career,” Sixers Managing Partner Josh Harris said in a statement. “Our focus is on bringing a championship back to this city.”
Harris highlighted the potential of the team’s new-look core, expressing eagerness to see James integrate alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, VJ Edgecombe, and the rest of the roster.
James, who turns 41, revealed last Friday that he selected Philadelphia in what he termed his “last decision,” noting that the Sixers offer him a realistic opportunity to add to his trophy haul before retiring.
Should Philadelphia capture the title, James would become the first player in NBA history to win championships with four different franchises, having previously won two titles with the Miami Heat, one with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and one with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The signing concludes an eight-year tenure with the Lakers, where James guided the franchise to the 2020 NBA championship following earlier stints in Cleveland and Miami across his 22-year career.
Sixers President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey praised the veteran’s arrival, emphasizing that his influence will extend beyond the scoreboard.
“There is no doubt LeBron is one of the greatest players to ever play the game,” Gansey said. “His impact on this organization will be immeasurable.”
