The Vice-Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has vowed to resign from office if Nigerians do not feel positive change one year into an Atiku Abubakar-led administration.
Amaechi made the bold promise during an interview on AIT on Wednesday, as he was unveiled alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 election.
“If Nigeria does not begin to change one year after we have come to office, come to me, I will resign,” Amaechi said. “You will have a breath of fresh air.”
The former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation said Nigeria is in trouble, citing rising poverty, hunger and high import dependence.
“You must deal with insecurity, economy, and corruption before this country can progress. And to do all that corruption will have to come down because there is no money for anybody to steal,” he said.
He defended Atiku’s plan to subsidize local refining, arguing that fuel subsidy removal has increased the cost of transport, food, rent and production.
“For instance, if the international market price of crude oil is N15,000, Dangote has a refinery… So you say to them, ‘Look gentlemen, we will sell to you at N10,000. Our subsidy is the N5,000 you are not paying,'” he explained, adding that the Petroleum Industry Act should be amended to allow it.
Amaechi also told ADC women leaders at the party’s National Women League Conference in Abuja that if the APC wins in 2027, the current crop of opposition leaders will retire from politics, urging grassroots mobilisation of at least 2,000 votes per ward.
