Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on members of the bench to consider the broader socio-economic and political consequences of their rulings, emphasizing that justice must be administered with courage, integrity, and absolute fairness.
Governor Fubara made the plea in Port Harcourt during the opening ceremony of the 66th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), themed “Beyond Limits.”
Addressing the assembly of legal practitioners, Fubara highlighted that national stability and public order are deeply tied to the quality of justice dispensed by the courts. He cautioned against technicalities, corruption, undue delays, and political interference, noting that such issues continue to erode public trust in the judicial system.
“Public confidence in the judiciary can only be strengthened when judges demonstrate sound knowledge of the law, courage, and commitment to holding both government and citizens accountable,” Fubara noted, urging the legal community to remain vigilant against attempts by political actors to undermine the rule of law.
Weah Advocates for Institutional Independence
Delivering a keynote address at the event, former Liberian President George Weah echoed the governor’s sentiments, demanding a completely independent judiciary to protect democratic institutions across Africa.
Weah stressed that democracy extends beyond election days and relies on daily institutional integrity. He warned that threats to democratic governance stem not only from political violence or refusals to cede power, but also from the subtle compromise of judicial independence and systemic corruption.
“Democracy cannot survive on the strength of individuals, but on strong institutions,” Weah stated, urging lawyers and judges to maintain impartiality to safeguard fundamental human rights and the rule of law.
