Former Governor of Rivers State and Vice-Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has brushed off his long-standing political rift with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, declaring that he will not engage in a war of words with someone he previously employed as a subordinate.
Amaechi made the statement during a live television interview while addressing ongoing political tensions and national issues.
Shifting his focus to the Presidency, the former minister strongly criticized the administration over what he termed an insult against Christians, particularly members of the Catholic faith. Amaechi disclosed that he was compelled to temporarily pause mourning his late mother to defend his faith against unacceptable remarks from the nation’s seat of power.
He mounted a firm defense for the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, insisting that their recent warnings regarding widespread economic hardship and worsening insecurity were genuine and patriotic. According to Amaechi, the bishops are strictly non-partisan and were merely urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take urgent steps to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
Faulting President Tinubu’s reported comments on electoral victory, Amaechi argued that rather than dismissing democratic concerns, the President should reassure both the Catholic clergy and the Nigerian electorate of a commitment to free, fair, and credible elections.
