White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia exited her post on Friday, October 16, 2026, failing to complete a full week in office after a sequence of public missteps compounded troubles for President Donald Trump.
An administration representative verified the exit to AFP following initial coverage by Fox News indicating that the 41-year-old official was stepping down.
Indications of her impending departure surfaced earlier when President Trump indicated he was open to her exit amid escalating scrutiny regarding a poorly received initial press briefing and disclosures regarding her professional credentials.
“I said, ‘Katie, is this for you? I said, ‘Katie, you don’t have to do this’… I said to her, ‘Honestly if I were you I’d reconsider,’” Trump remarked to journalists.
During Trump’s initial administration, investor Anthony Scaramucci gained international attention for holding the position of White House communications director for only 11 days. Zacharia’s tenure fell well short of that duration.
“Records are made to be broken,” Scaramucci posted on X, noting, “But I take no pleasure in other people’s pain.”
Taking over from Karoline Leavitt, who previously altered press outreach by favoring supportive media platforms while pushing back aggressively against opposing outlets, Zacharia faced immediate difficulties.
Her first press briefing on Tuesday morning spanned under a quarter of an hour. It commenced with a protracted listing of administration achievements prior to accepting merely three inquiries from the press corps.
Pressure mounted further when questions arose regarding Zacharia’s previous assertions that she was a qualified attorney. Although possessing a legal degree from a California institution, she conceded on Thursday that she had not passed the bar exam, a mandatory requirement for legal practice in the nation.
Attempts to clarify the situation through conservative media channels proved unsuccessful. During an exchange with Fox News host Sean Hannity, when questioned if she had attempted the exam again, Zacharia answered, “I did not,” stating further, “It was never my intent to go into the practice of law.” In a separate appearance on Real America’s Voice, she stated she had previously signed up for the test but grew preoccupied with relocation plans to China alongside her spouse, adding that colleagues suggested her academic background sufficed for the title.
Additionally, Zacharia generated international tension during a Thursday conversation with political commentator Jack Posobiec. Discussing historical views regarding China’s global standing, she commented: “I remember this very distinctly, having just come from China, thinking, ‘How is China the next country on the horizon? They don’t even have proper toilets.’”
In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning advised on Friday that Zacharia ought to “visit China more often.”
The personnel change arrives as an additional complication for the 80-year-old president while he travels nationwide to support Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 congressional midterms, which surveys indicate pose significant challenges for the party. The White House continues dealing with diminished public support amidst mounting public weariness concerning the conflict involving Iran, ongoing economic inflation, and domestic controversies.
