The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, JNPSNC, has confirmed September 30 ultimatum to the Federal Government, threatening a three-day warning strike from Friday, October 2, 2026 in reaction to recent hike in fuel prices.
The council, which comprises eight public sector unions, said the warning strike will go ahead if the government fails to address its demands before today’s deadline.
The three key demands are: Reduction of petrol price to N500 per litre; Immediate wage award for workers; Constitution of a tripartite committee to negotiate a new minimum wage of not less than N500,000 from 2027.
The Council had written to President Bola Tinubu on September 21, proposing measures including an intervention fund to address fuel landing costs and sale of crude to Dangote Refinery and local refiners on appropriate terms.
The National Secretary of the JNPSNC and General Secretary of the Nigeria Civil Service Union, Gbenga Olowoyo, in a statement on Tuesday, said the September 30 deadline remains sacrosanct and urged President Tinubu to address the issues in his Independence Day speech.
He said Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, which now sells between N1,450 and N2,000 per litre and up to N2,500 in some areas, has worsened hardship for workers. Unions under JNPSNC include the Nigerian Civil Service Union, Medical and Health Workers Union, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, among others.
The council said it has already mobilised public servants nationwide for the action.
