South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has temporarily stepped back from all public engagements following medical advice to rest, the Presidency announced on Friday.
The development comes shortly after the 73-year-old leader returned to South Africa from the BRICS summit in India. While confirming his temporary withdrawal from official duties, the Presidency did not disclose the specific nature of his illness or the expected duration of his recovery period.
The President’s absence creates an unexpected leadership vacuum, as Deputy President Paul Mashatile is currently on medical leave following a minor surgical procedure.
Under South Africa’s constitution, when both the President and Deputy President are unable to fulfill their duties, a designated Cabinet Minister can be appointed to act as President.
Following the medical advice, Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola will represent South Africa at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The Presidency reassured the public that Ramaphosa is expected to resume his official duties following his rest period, while urging citizens and the media to refrain from unnecessary speculation regarding his health.
