The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to explain the recent redeployment of Electoral Officers in the state, citing concerns over potential political interference ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the party, seven Electoral Officers previously serving in Rivers State were redeployed to other states, sparking allegations that some officers were removed due to their perceived unwillingness to compromise their independence. The ADC alleged that individuals associated with the “Rainbow Coalition” may have influenced the redeployments.
The party urged INEC to clarify who authorized the redeployments, the reasons behind the decisions, and whether any political organization or government official was involved. The ADC also expressed concern over alleged efforts to compile names of persons for sensitive ad-hoc electoral duties and called for transparency in the recruitment process.
The ADC’s concerns come amid recent political pronouncements concerning the 2027 elections in Rivers State, particularly statements by Minister Nyesom Wike. The party emphasized that while politicians can express confidence in their strength, no individual or group should imply the election outcome is predetermined.
The ADC called on INEC to investigate the allegations, reassure Rivers residents of the commission’s neutrality, and support measures to strengthen electoral integrity. The party also urged civil society organizations, media, and election observers to monitor the election preparations.
