RIVERS ASSEMBLY INVESTIGATES ALLEGED ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION IN ANDONI BY CHINESE FIRM

The Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions has launched an on-the-spot investigation into a mining site in Ikuru Town, Andoni Local Government Area, following grave allegations of environmental destruction against a Chinese-owned firm, LDM Limited.

The fact-finding visit, ordered by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, was led by the committee chairman, Dr. Enemi Alabo George.

Dr. George stated that the physical inspection was designed to independently verify claims raised in a formal petition submitted by the Andoni Local Government Council and local residents, as well as audit the company’s compliance with established environmental regulations.

Speaking during the exercise, a traditional ruler in the area, His Highness Ubon Minini-Oyo, disclosed that the firm’s ongoing mining operations have triggered severe flooding and destroyed a critical local conservation area known to shelter endangered wildlife species. Distressed by the impact on local livelihoods, community leaders called for an immediate halt to all mining activities in the area.

Briefing stakeholders at the site, Dr. George assured that the committee would collect soil samples, consult technical experts, and evaluate the full scale of the damage before laying its report before the floor of the House for legislative action.

While reiterating the state’s openness to economic partnerships, the lawmaker warned that corporate investments must strictly align with safety standards and community welfare.

“We welcome investment, but we will not allow exploitation. You can explore without exploiting our people and environment,” Dr. George declared.

The inspection delegation included the Chairman of Andoni Local Government Area, Hon. Prince Lucky Promise Otuo; the member representing Andoni Constituency, Hon. Ofiks Kagbang Christopher; alongside traditional rulers and community representatives.
