In a major bid to tackle chaotic traffic conditions and curb widespread lawlessness on the roads, the Rivers State Police Command has announced the immediate statewide enforcement of “Operation Velvet,” effective Sunday, August 17, 2026.
The directive, issued in alignment with orders from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aims to restore discipline and ensure smooth vehicular movement across the state.
Announcing the launch, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, cited a troubling surge in the disregard for basic traffic laws. He noted that persistent violations have generated severe gridlocks, chronic road obstructions, and heightened safety hazards for commuters and pedestrians alike.
The crackdown will apply indiscriminately to all road users, including private motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, and motorcyclists.
To execute the mandate, CP Adepoju has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Tactical Commanders to enforce strict compliance within their respective jurisdictions. Defaulters face immediate arrest, vehicle impoundment, and legal prosecution.
Zero Tolerance for Extortion and Misconduct
Addressing potential concerns over police excess, CP Adepoju issued a stern warning to personnel deployed for the exercise, emphasizing that professional conduct and respect for human rights are non-negotiable.
Officers were explicitly cautioned against extortion, harassment, intimidation, or any form of abuse of office.
“Any officer found engaging in extortion, brutality, or unprofessional conduct during this exercise will face severe disciplinary sanctions,” the Command warned.
To guarantee accountability, the Command has established dedicated public complaint hotlines, urging residents to report traffic emergencies as well as any incidents of police misconduct or extortion.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Rivers State Police Command reiterated that the operation is designed to deliver safer roads, orderly traffic, and protection for all residents while upholding fundamental human rights.
