The authorities of the Rivers State University has banned driving of private cars by undergraduates on campus as part of measures to ensure safety of people on the campus.
Tragedy struck on Tuesday evening when a suspected “Yahoo Boy” crashed his car and killed a female undergraduate of the Rivers State University on campus.
Reports have it that the suspected yahoo boy and his other friends were allegedly involved in car racing on campus when the tragedy occurred. His vehicle reportedly lost control and rammed into the lady, who went out to get something for herself when she got hit by the car after losing control.
According to an eyewitness, some boys allegedly engaged in car racing and one of the cars lost control and rammed into the lady. She died on the spot while the guys fled the scene. It was also said that one of the guys involved in the car racing on campus was apprehended and handed over to the school authority.
In a statement signed by the Acting Registrar of the institution, Dr Idanyingi Daminabo, on Wednesday, banned undergraduate students from driving into campus from 4pm to 7am. It directed the undergraduates who drive into campus to park at designated points close to the school gate and use approved campus shuttle to their respective locations.

The statement reads: ‘Post Graduate students and Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) students shall only be permitted to drive personal vehicles within campus upon presentation of valid university identity cards.
‘Any Student found engaging in reckless driving shall be suspended and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action, in addition to having their cars impounded,’ the statement added.
The statement further commiserated with the families of the late undergraduate who was killed in the reckless driving on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the two suspects allegedly involved in car racing on campus.
