The administration of Degema Local Government Area in River State, has appealed to the residents of Obuama in Harry’s Town to remain law-abiding and maintain the peace following the discovery of the lifeless bodies of community members along the river boundary sharing borders with Emohua Local Government Area.
The Chairman of Degema Local Government, Michael John Williams, made the plea during a fact-finding town hall meeting with the Obuama Council of Chiefs in Harry’s Town. He assured the community that security agencies have launched an investigation to track down the perpetrators.
“I met with security agencies in the LGA, and the briefing I received from them aligns closely with the account provided by the Obuama Council of Chiefs,” Williams said. “I must commend you all for your civility and for not taking the law into your own hands. Our people will always rely on the waterways for commerce and other activities, so please continue to maintain peace.”
The council boss commiserated with the people of Obuama and the bereaved families over the tragic loss, promising that the local government council would provide financial support for the funeral rites once the police conclude their initial findings.
“One million, two million Naira, or even more cannot bring back the lives lost. To the bereaved families, please take heart. I am aware that the bodies are currently in police custody for forensic investigation. As soon as the police release them to the families, please notify the local government so we can support the burial rites,” Williams added.
Meanwhile, Tariah Benibo, the father of one of the victims, expressed his profound grief in a chat with correspondent Ephraim Emmanuel, noting that his late son, Jadiepreye Benibo, was the primary provider for the family.
“My son, Jadiepreye Benibo, was all I had. He was the one taking care of me, and now he is no more. I need justice to prevail,” the grieving father lamented. “My son left behind a wife and children, and I have no help from anywhere.”
