The Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Council, Rivers State, Gift Worlu, has banned the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, for passenger transportation within the council area.
Ban Takes Effect August 1
In a statement, Worlu said the restriction will take effect from August 1, 2026. He explained that the measure is part of the administration’s commitment to strengthen security, promote public order, and reduce road accidents.
“The activities of commercial motorcycle operators have raised significant concerns relating to traffic management, public safety, and criminal activities,” the statement noted.
What’s Allowed, What’s Not
The Chairman clarified that private ownership and lawful personal use of motorcycles remain unaffected, subject to existing laws and regulations. Approved dispatch riders, licensed courier and logistics operators, emergency responders, and security agencies will also continue to operate in the lawful discharge of their duties.
Enforcement & Compliance Window
Worlu said enforcement will be carried out in collaboration with relevant security agencies and authorized Council officials. Commercial motorcycle operators have been advised to use the period leading up to July 31, 2026 to make alternative arrangements and comply fully with the directive.
