Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has commissioned the newly completed 19.97-kilometer Buguma-Degema-Abonnema Road, stating that the project was driven by a commitment to address the deplorable and embarrassing condition the road was in prior to construction.
Speaking on Monday during the official commissioning ceremony, Governor Fubara emphasized that the completed road has already significantly curtailed insecurity in the area while enhancing the overall quality of life for residents and commuters.
The governor noted that the strategic importance of the infrastructure extends beyond mere transit, highlighting its role in uniting local communities, easing the transportation of goods, and sparking fresh commercial opportunities. He added that the project stands as one of the key administrative milestones his leadership will showcase during upcoming political campaigns for candidates of his party.
Governor Fubara also praised the host communities along the corridor for their peaceful cooperation with the contractors, which ensured the smooth and timely execution of the project.
In his remarks, the Special Guest of Honour and Amanyanabo of Abonnema, King Disreal Bobmanuel, expressed gratitude to the governor for delivering the project within record time. The monarch observed that the road is already attracting development to the Kalabari axis and commended the state government for simultaneously embarking on the main Trans-Kalabari Road project.
Providing technical details earlier, the State Commissioner for Works, Professor Temple Nwofor, disclosed that the 19.97-kilometer road contract was awarded in September 2024 and completed within 15 months. He characterized the project as a critical infrastructural intervention that will boost connectivity and drive socio-economic growth across the benefiting communities.
