Court Halts NBA Port Harcourt Branch Election Over Voters’ Register Dispute

By Precious Amadi

A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has restrained the Nigerian Bar Association, Port Harcourt Branch, from proceeding with its planned election over disputes surrounding the branch’s electoral register.

The order followed a suit filed by Godstime Elewa, Daminabo Davies, and Odinaka Emenike. The claimants alleged that the voters’ register contained the names of imposters and asked the court to halt the election until a valid register is produced. In his ruling, Justice Sika Aprioku directed the NBA leadership and the Electoral Committee to produce the correct electoral register before the election can hold.

The matter was adjourned to July 6 for further hearing. The branch election had been scheduled for Friday, June 27, ahead of the expiration of incumbent Chairman Cordelia Eke’s tenure. The court’s order effectively puts the polls on hold pending compliance with its directive.
