The Rivers State House of Assembly has endorsed the constitutional amendment required for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.
The decision was taken on Monday, September 28, 2026, following the transmission of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, by the National Assembly to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration.
The Rivers Assembly’s endorsement adds the state to the legislatures considering the proposed constitutional changes aimed at creating a legal framework for state policing.
The bill seeks amendments to the 1999 Constitution to provide for the establishment and operation of state police.
The move comes amid ongoing national discussions over police reform and the need to strengthen security at the state and community levels.
The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has 32 members representing the state’s 23 local government areas.
The Assembly’s position was reported by Channels Television on Monday, September 28, with further details of the legislative proceedings expected as consideration of the constitutional amendment continues.
