The ongoing peace and reconciliation efforts between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, have been described as a calculated political gambit rather than a genuine move to resolve their feud.
Social and political analyst Comrade Solomon Lenu made the assertion while assessing the protracted political crisis in Rivers State, arguing that recent truce efforts appear driven strictly by political expediency.
According to Lenu, the political rift between both camps remains defined by a zero-sum, “winner-takes-all” approach, making claims of cordial relations misleading.
He suggested that the public peace process was primarily staged to satisfy expectations from President Bola Tinubu, creating a facade that both factions were adhering to calls for settlement.
Expressing doubt over the sincerity of Wike’s camp, Leno alleged that despite the Rivers State Government meeting several demands—including financial commitments—the state’s budget has continued to face hurdles without receiving expected approvals.
“Political interests remain dominant, leaving the governor under continuous pressure and frustration,” Leno stated, adding that the protracted struggle has relegated the interests of Rivers residents to the background.
While noting that the governor’s main supporters have largely maintained a cautious silence, Leno explained that he chose to speak out as an unaligned observer focused on the state’s broader well-being.
He urged the people of Rivers State to remain focused on their collective welfare and look toward the 2027 democratic process to elect leaders who will prioritize governance over political rivalry.
