The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from his position amid moves by some lawmakers to remove him from office.
Agbebaku reportedly stepped down on Monday, August 17, 2026, as pressure mounted within the Edo State legislature over his leadership.
His resignation was confirmed in a Facebook post by his media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, who announced the development without providing details on the circumstances surrounding the Speaker’s decision.
“EDO ASSEMBLY SPEAKER RT HON CHIEF BLESSING AGBEBAKU RESIGNS,” Adodo-Ebojele wrote.
She, however, indicated that further details concerning Agbebaku’s resignation would be made public later.
The development comes against the backdrop of reported moves by some lawmakers to impeach the Speaker, although the specific grievances against him and the number of lawmakers involved in the alleged impeachment move were not immediately clear.
Agbebaku’s resignation has now thrown the Edo State House of Assembly into a fresh leadership crisis, with lawmakers expected to begin the process of selecting a new presiding officer.
