The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Gift Worlu, has appealed to protesting commercial drivers and residents of the area to remain calm and refrain from taking actions that could breach public peace and safety.
The appeal follows a major protest by members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) along the Obio/Akpor axis of the East-West Road over an incident involving a commercial minibus driver near the Obiri-Ikwerre Flyover.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Goodluck Nsirim, the council chairman expressed concern over the development and disclosed that local authorities are investigating the situation.
Council Orders Investigation
Addressing reports surrounding the incident, Nsirim stated that while claims regarding the driver’s death have not been officially confirmed, the local government is aware that the driver sustained severe, life-threatening injuries.
He noted that the council chairman has ordered a swift and thorough investigation to uncover the facts surrounding the event, assuring the public that justice will be served.
“The Chairman has directed an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident to ascertain the facts,” Nsirim said. “The public is assured that anyone found culpable will be held accountable and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
The local government council urged transport operators, union members, and community members to allow law enforcement agents to carry out their duties and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
