The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has taken a major step toward curbing heart disease in the state with the official launch of its Department of Cardiology and new advanced cardiac diagnostic services.
The Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Professor Chizindu Alikor, announced the development during events marking the 2026 World Cardiology Day in Port Harcourt, held under the theme: “Strengthening Systems for Better Heart Health.”
Professor Alikor stated that the new department is designed to enhance specialized patient care, advance clinical research, improve medical training, and foster innovation to combat the growing burden of cardiovascular illnesses in Rivers State.
“The launch of the Department of Cardiology will provide specialized patient care, strengthen research, enhance training, and drive innovation, positioning the hospital to better address the growing burden of heart-related illnesses in Rivers State,” Alikor said.
Echoing his sentiments, the Head of the Department of Cardiology, Dr. Boma Oyan, described the milestone as the realization of years of hard work aimed at transforming cardiovascular treatment and medical education in the region.
Dr. Oyan highlighted that the hospital has commissioned dedicated cardiology wards alongside cutting-edge cardiac imaging technology. These additions will allow RSUTH to deliver world-class, patient-centered care while serving as a hub for training future heart specialists.
“The newly commissioned cardiology wards and advanced cardiac imaging technologies will strengthen our capacity to deliver world-class, patient-centered heart care while training the next generation of cardiovascular specialists,” Dr. Oyan noted.
