NEMA Intensifies Monitoring of Orashi River, Urges Flood Preparedness in Rivers State

By Precious Amadi

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched a coordinated monitoring operation along the Orashi River to mitigate impending flood risks across vulnerable communities in Rivers State.

NEMA South-South Zonal Director, Eric Ebodaghe, confirmed that the agency is tracking water levels in the river, which remains the primary source of seasonal flooding in the region. The high-risk zones currently under close watch include Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, and Abua/Odual Local Government Areas.

According to Ebodaghe, NEMA has intensified its disaster preparedness measures and is structuring relief plans to support residents in the threatened areas.

However, the agency stressed that local intervention is critical. Ebodaghe called on the Rivers State Government to take the lead by executing proactive safety measures before the rainy season reaches its peak. Specifically, NEMA urged state authorities to clear refuse and obstructions from urban drains, canals, and waterways to prevent severe structural flooding.

Reaffirming NEMA’s commitment to regional safety, Ebodaghe noted that the agency will continue working alongside local communities and stakeholders to reinforce early warning systems and boost emergency preparedness.
