A surviving police officer injured during an attack by suspected gunmen on a security post in Rivers State has appealed to Nigerians for financial assistance to enable him continue life-saving medical treatment following the amputation of his right leg.
Inspector Goday Aleru, one of the officers attacked at the Mbodo Aluu C4i Security Post on June 29, 2026, made the appeal while speaking with ExceedFM from his hospital bed.
The attack, carried out by unidentified gunmen, claimed the lives of two police officers, while the assailants reportedly carted away their service rifles. Inspector Aleru sustained multiple gunshot wounds and remains the only surviving officer from the incident.
Narrating his ordeal, the officer said he was rushed to the hospital after the attack but alleged that he did not receive medical attention until four days later.
“I was brought to the emergency ward of the hospital on Monday, June 29, 2026, and was left unattended until Friday, July 3, before doctors attended to me while I still had gunshot bullets in my body,” he said.
According to Aleru, doctors removed 16 bullets from his leg, but the severity of the injuries eventually resulted in the amputation of his right leg.
The father of four said the cost of his treatment has placed enormous financial pressure on his family, forcing them to borrow more than ₦2 million to pay hospital bills.
“We have borrowed over two million naira from people, and my treatment is delayed if I don’t provide the necessary items requested by the caregivers for surgeries and treatment. I beg Nigerians to please come to my aid,” he pleaded.
Inspector Aleru said he still requires additional surgeries and specialized medical care, adding that financial support would enable him to continue treatment and improve his chances of recovery.
Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, visited both the crime scene and the injured officer at the hospital. During the visit, the police commissioner assured that the command would intensify efforts to track down and arrest those responsible for the deadly attack.
Earlier, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Agabe Blessing Karbolo, in a statement issued, assured that the police would take over the medical bills of the injured police officer.
Police authorities have yet to announce any arrests in connection with the incident as investigations continue.
