The Rivers State House of Assembly has given a first reading to a landmark bill aimed at re-establishing the Government Sea School, Isaka, located in the Okrika Local Government Area, as a fully functional maritime and vocational training institution.
The legislative measure was presented during the House’s 69th legislative sitting on Tuesday. It is designed to provide a comprehensive legal framework governing the institution’s administration, funding, and general operations.
Sponsoring the bill, the lawmaker representing Okrika Constituency, Hon. Linda Somiari-Stewart, explained that the proposed legislation seeks to repeal the existing Rivers State Sports Institute Law and replace it with a mandate tailored to modern maritime standards and the expanding demands of the blue economy.
The bill is co-sponsored by a team of lawmakers, including Hon. Arnold Davids, Hon. Tonye Adoki, Hon. Enemi George, Hon. Igwe Aforji, Hon. Azeru Opara, and Hon. Nkemjika Ezekwe.
Earlier in the session, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, presided over the plenary and welcomed members back, which included the three recently recalled lawmakers.
According to our Assembly correspondent, the successful passage of the bill through its first reading marks the official commencement of the legislative process for the institution’s revival.
