The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Oru East State Constituency in Imo State, Barr. Mbaeri Bruno Okechukwu, has strongly condemned the reported violent attack on an NDC political gathering in Enugu State, which left one person dead and several others with grievous injuries after gunshots were allegedly fired into the crowd.
Reacting to the incident, Barr. Mbaeri decried the use of firearms, political violence, and intimidation against unarmed citizens, maintaining that such barbaric acts have no place in a modern democratic society.
He called on relevant security agencies to launch a prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation to track down the perpetrators and ensure they face the full wrath of the law.
Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, the Imo State Assembly hopeful extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured victims a swift recovery. He stressed that no political ambition or partisan interest is worth the life of any Nigerian.
“Our democracy must not become a battlefield. No Nigerian should lose his or her life for participating in the democratic process,” Mbaeri stated.
He further appealed to political actors across all divides, party supporters, and the nation’s youth to reject violence, foster political tolerance, and channel their differences through peaceful, lawful means.
“Democracy must be sustained through dialogue, respect for opposing views, and the ballot—not bullets,” he concluded.
