The father of a young man allegedly shot and killed by an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Port Harcourt has called on the authorities to ensure the officer responsible is brought to justice.
The victim, identified as Itekena George, was reportedly killed on Wednesday, July 15, at his family residence in Fimie Ama Community, off Abuloma Road, Port Harcourt.
Speaking exclusively with ExceedFM, the victim’s father, Christian George, alleged that the NSCDC officer shot his son following an accusation that he had injured one person and threatened to attack another.
According to the grieving father, the allegation was reported only minutes before the shooting, insisting that the situation did not warrant the use of lethal force.
He appealed to the Rivers State Government, the Commissioner of Police, and other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure justice is served.
Also reacting to the incident, the President of the Southern Youth Foundation, Emeni Ibe, condemned the killing of one of the organization’s members, describing it as unacceptable.
Ibe called on security agencies to carry out a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and ensure that any officer found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) for further investigation.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the use of force by security personnel, with residents and civil society groups urging the authorities to ensure accountability and prevent similar occurrences.
Both the police and the NSCDC are yet to issue any official statement on the incident as at the time of filing this report.
