In a major move to halt the recurring, often volatile clashes between security agents and legal practitioners, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have agreed to forge a new era of mutual respect and institutional collaboration.
The resolution was reached on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, during a high-profile courtesy visit by the newly minted NBA National President, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, and her executive team to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
A formal statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, revealed that both leaderships acknowledged the deep-seated frictions between police officers and lawyers. They committed to dismantling these barriers through improved communication, specialized training, and stronger ties between Police lawyers and the wider Bar.
“Both professions have complementary responsibilities within the justice system,” Badejo-Okusanya emphasised during the meeting. She maintained that the NBA is actively seeking an end to public confrontations, urging that the two bodies must work together rather than at cross-purposes.
Highlighting a new human rights frontier, the NBA President introduced a UNICEF-supported initiative aimed at transforming child justice in Nigeria. Under this framework, the NBA is proposing the stationing of a dedicated Police lawyer at every police division nationwide. These legal officers will provide immediate, specialized legal support to vulnerable children who come into contact with the juvenile justice system.
Responding, IGP Olatunji Disu congratulated Badejo-Okusanya on her election and embraced the proposal for a more structured partnership. However, the Police Chief did not mince words regarding public perceptions and civilian-police friction.
Disu called for strict professionalism in how the public and legal professionals record and share interactions with police personnel. He strongly warned against trivialising the demanding and dangerous conditions under which officers operate, stating that personnel should not be subjected to ridicule for “social media entertainment.”
“While lawyers are principally concerned with protecting citizens’ rights and the Police with protecting lives and property, the responsibilities of both institutions converge in the administration of justice,” Disu remarked, stating that disagreements must be handled with civility rather than public escalation.
To ensure this pact translates into action, the NPF and NBA have agreed to set up a dedicated NPF/NBA communication mechanism. This institutional channel is expected to:
- Prevent Escalation: Resolve professional disputes quietly and structurally before they turn into public confrontations.
- Speed Up Justice: Implement joint measures designed to heavily reduce delays in criminal trials.
- Enhance Human Rights: Safeguard fundamental human rights while boosting public trust in the criminal justice system.
