Nigeria’s junior women’s national basketball team, the Junior D’Tigress, have been eliminated from main contention at the 22nd FIBA U18 Women’s Afrobasket following a winless campaign in Group A.
The disappointing run ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIBA Under-19 World Cup, as the continental showpiece serves as Africa’s official qualifier for the global tournament.
The team’s campaign got off to a difficult start on August 5, 2026, with a crushing 95–68 loss to a dominant Egyptian side. The setback was compounded two days later on August 7 when Nigeria fell 59–50 to Chad a result governing body FIBA characterized as a “historic win” for the Chadian team.
Any remaining hopes of a turnaround were dashed on August 9, as hosts Côte d’Ivoire handed the Junior D’Tigress their third consecutive defeat, winning 77–68.
The three straight losses leave Nigeria anchored to the bottom of Group A with a 0–3 record.
This marks only the second time in the competition’s history that a Nigerian team has failed to secure a single group-stage victory, matching a record last set in 2010.
What Comes Next
Under the tournament structure, the top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, advance to the quarter-finals. Having missed the cut, Nigeria drops into the 9th–12th place playoff bracket.
The Junior D’Tigress will now look to salvage some pride in the classification round, beginning with a semi-final matchup against Morocco. Gabon and Rwanda will face off in the second classification semi-final.
