DISASTER IN EMOHUA: Flash Flood Collapses Agbaka Bridge, Leaves Rumueche Community Stranded

By Ephraim Emmanuel

Normal life has ground to a sudden halt for the residents, farmers, and commuters of Rumueche community in Emohua Local Government Area following the catastrophic collapse of the vital Agbaka Bridge, triggered by relentless flash flooding.

The collapse of the bridge—a crucial artery connecting the agrarian community to local markets and neighbouring towns—has severed access, forcing desperate locals to navigate a precarious, hastily constructed wooden plank crossing. Residents and commercial motorcyclists have sounded the alarm, describing the makeshift bypass as a hazardous death trap that threatens lives daily, particularly for traders transporting heavy agricultural produce.

“Crossing this wooden structure every day is a gamble with our lives,” expressed a concerned community member. “Farmers cannot move their goods safely, and motorcyclists risk falling into the surging water. We are pleading for urgent intervention before a disaster occurs.”

In a swift response to the growing crisis, the Executive Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, Dr. Chidi Lloyd, led a team of civil engineers on an on-the-spot assessment of the damaged infrastructure.

Addressing the community during the inspection, Dr. Lloyd announced immediate relief measures, approving the comprehensive desilting of the Abaka Canal in Rumueche. The emergency project aims to clear heavy refuse blockages, restore natural stormwater flow, and prevent further erosion and localized flooding.

Dr. Lloyd further assured the community that the local government council is actively documenting the full extent of the damage. He pledged that the council will formally escalate the incident to the Rivers State Government to fast-track a permanent, state-backed engineering solution and full reconstruction of the bridge.

For now, the people of Rumueche remain on high alert, relying on temporary measures while awaiting the swift deployment of heavy machinery to restore their primary gateway.
