Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses etched their name into the history books on Sunday, sweeping aside tournament debutants Malawi 3-0 at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium to claim their maiden Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
A ruthless first-half attacking display settled the contest before the break, with forward Marie Ngah starring with a brace and Naomi Ndjoah Eto adding a third to seal an emphatic victory.
Ngah broke the deadlock in the 20th minute with a clinical finish before Ndjoah Eto doubled the advantage ten minutes later, turning home an inch-perfect pass from Myriam Nyadjou.
The Indomitable Lionesses put the result beyond doubt in first-half stoppage time when Ndjoah Eto turned provider, setting up Ngah to notch her second of the night and cap off a dominant opening 45 minutes.
The triumph marks a dramatic moment of redemption for Cameroon, banishing the ghosts of past heartbreak after runners-up finishes to Nigeria in 2004, 2014, and 2016. With this victory, Cameroon becomes just the fourth nation to lift the coveted WAFCON trophy, joining an elite group alongside Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and South Africa.
Earlier on Saturday, Algeria secured the bronze medal after defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 in a tense penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
All four semi-finalists — Cameroon, Malawi, Algeria, and Morocco — have officially booked their spots as Africa’s representatives at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
