The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for 25 days to facilitate comprehensive runway rehabilitation and extension works.
The closure, scheduled to take effect on October 20, 2026, comes ahead of the heavy passenger influx typically experienced during the Christmas travel season.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made the announcement via a statement on his X handle on Friday. He explained that the resolution followed strategic consultations between the Federal Government, the Imo State Government, and key aviation stakeholders in the South-East region.
According to Keyamo, he held discussions earlier in the day with Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, emphasizing that the timing of the project is critical to guaranteeing safety and boosting the airport’s operational capacity ahead of the holidays.
Scope of Rehabilitation Work
The project, spearheaded by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria in collaboration with the state government, will address long-standing infrastructural defects. Key focus areas include:
Pavement Repairs: Fixing severely deteriorated sections of the runway pavement.
Surface Remediation: Treating extensive surface cracks and filling deep potholes.
Resurfacing & Expansion: Complete resurfacing of affected strips alongside a planned runway extension to accommodate larger aircraft.
Minimizing Passenger Disruption
Acknowledging the inconvenience the shutdown will cause travelers, the minister appealed for the public’s understanding, reiterating that aviation safety remains a non-negotiable priority.
The Federal Government has urged affected passengers booked during the closure window to immediately contact their respective airlines for flight rescheduling, cancellations, or alternative travel arrangements. Official and confirmed closure dates will be broadcast through formal aviation channels.
Keyamo commended Governor Uzodimma for partnering with the federal administration to elevate regional aviation infrastructure, noting that the upgrades will ultimately stimulate long-term economic growth across the South-East.
