Rivers Reconciliation Must Prioritise People’s Welfare, Attract Investors — Public Analyst

By Elvira Jordan

A public affairs analyst, Dr. Rogers Ogan, has urged political leaders in Rivers State to ensure that the ongoing reconciliation delivers lasting peace, attracts investment and improves residents’ welfare, warning that the process must go beyond political agreements.

Dr Ogan described the reconciliation as a welcome development that could restore stability and create an enabling environment for economic growth, noting that political crises often discourage investors and hinder development.

Speaking on the political situation in the state, he stressed that the welfare of the people must not be politicized or sacrificed in the pursuit of political interests.

According to him, the success of the reconciliation should be measured by its impact on ordinary residents and the broader development of Rivers State.

“The most important thing is that the welfare of the people should not be politicized. Because if the people’s welfare is not being considered, then we are also not getting it right as a state. Based on what is happening, we are happy for the fact that there’s a reconciliation,” he stated.

On the forthcoming 2027 general elections, Ogan said growing public dissatisfaction with the political class could encourage more Nigerians to participate in politics and demand changes in governance.

He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to remain impartial and ensure a transparent electoral process that allows Nigerians to freely choose their leaders.

“A lot of people are getting involved now in politics because if do not participate, you’re also not sure of the future being right. That’s why 2027 is going to be interesting,” he added.

Ogan also expressed hope that the elections would be conducted peacefully, stressing that credible polls were essential to strengthening public confidence in the democratic process.

He urged Nigerians to take greater responsibility for governance by obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards, joining political movements and demanding accountability from elected representatives.

The analyst further encouraged citizens to engage their local government representatives and constituency leaders, insisting that active public participation was necessary to ensure that the government remained responsive to the needs of the people.

He maintained that sustained peace in Rivers State, coupled with responsible leadership and meaningful citizen participation, would help create opportunities for investment and development.
