By Samuel Olusegun Precious

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has  on Tuesday unveiled its roadmap for the 2027 general elections, with Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, saying the commission is targeting simultaneous voting across all polling units in the country.

Prof Amupitan disclosed this in Abuja at a National Stakeholders’ Meeting and World Press Conference held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre as preparations enter the final 100-day stretch.

“I want to see a general election where voting starts in all the polling units in Nigeria at the same instance. That is what we are targeting, where logistics is well-addressed, and where our technology works optimally,” he said.

The INEC chairman said the commission has drawn lessons from recent off-cycle elections and has already commenced early procurement and distribution of non-sensitive materials, procured new operational vehicles for state and LGA offices, and begun nationwide zonal readiness assessments.

He revealed that INEC has acquired 57,000 new Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices, which are undergoing software hardening, battery optimisation and biometric calibration, while about 1.4 million ad hoc staff, including over 850,000 corps members and students, will be deployed.

On the election timetable, INEC maintained February 20, 2027 for Presidential and National Assembly elections and March 6, 2027 for Governorship and State Assembly polls.

Amupitan reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to delivering free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive elections, noting that the Continuous Voter Registration exercise has pushed the register to nearly 100 million voters.

The meeting was attended by political party leaders, security chiefs, diplomats, CSOs, observer groups and media executives.
