House of Reps Extend 2025 Capital Budget Execution to Dec 31

By Sandra Kenneth

In a bid to prevent the abandonment of critical infrastructure across the nation, the House of Representatives has further extended the implementation deadline for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act to December 31, 2026.

The extension follows an executive request submitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu. In the communication, the President sought additional time to enable Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to disburse funds and complete ongoing capital projects captured under the 2025 fiscal framework.

Lawmakers passed the amendment bill through accelerated readings during plenary, stressing that funding bottlenecks and procurement delays necessitated the timeline adjustment to safeguard public investments.

This legislative action marks the latest in a series of deadline extensions for the 2025 capital budget. Originally set to expire on December 31, 2025, the capital implementation window was initially extended to March 31, 2026, subsequently moved to June 30 and September 30, and has now been pushed to the close of the 2026 calendar year.

With this latest approval, federal agencies now have until the end of the year to fully execute and disburse allocations tied to the 2025 capital budget.
