2026 Floods: ONC Lauds Fubara over Reconstituted Committee, Urges Scale-Up of Relief

By Olusegun Samuel Precious

The Orashi National Congress (ONC) has commended the Rivers State Government, under the leadership of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, for reconstituting the Rivers State Flood Management Committee to address the impact of the 2026 flooding.

Speaking on Tuesday, the President General of the ONC, Amb. Comrade Emeni Ibe, praised the state government following the official flag-off of relief material distribution to flood-affected residents in the Oyigbo and Eleme Local Government Areas. The exercise was led by the Deputy Governor and Chairman of the committee, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu.

In a statement, Ibe described the intervention as both timely and essential for strengthening the state’s coordinated response. He expressed full confidence in Prof. Odu’s leadership, noting that her team possesses the capacity to deliver on its mandate.

“The committee’s early engagement with affected communities demonstrates the importance of a structured response to the humanitarian challenges associated with flooding,” Ibe said.

Call for Expanded Relief Efforts

While applauding the prompt action, the ONC leader appealed to the state government to scale up the volume of relief materials as the flood situation continues to evolve across more communities.

He urged the committee to maintain continuous monitoring and assessment so that relief items reach all vulnerable residents, including those displaced outside official Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.

Reaffirming the group’s support for disaster-response mechanisms across Rivers State, Ibe emphasized that proactive measures remain crucial. The Orashi National Congress represents communities spanning Rivers, Imo, Bayelsa, and Delta states—regions that are historically vulnerable to seasonal flooding.
