The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Rumuola Unit in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, has called on security agencies to intervene following an alleged flagrant disobedience of an interim court injunction by competing transport groups in Rivers State.
In a press release signed by the Chairman of the NURTW Rumuola Branch, Comrade Julius Uzoma, the union revealed that the Rivers State High Court, presided over by Hon. Justice Sobere Biambo, had issued an interim order restraining several parties from interfering with the union’s operations pending the determination of a substantive suit.
The defendants named in the court order include Christopher Ezeali, the Registered Trustees of Commercial Drivers Welfare Association, the Registered Trustees of Drivers Welfare Club Nigeria, the Registered Trustees of Self Employed Drivers Welfare Initiative, and the Rivers Drivers Cooperative Union Limited.
Despite the subsisting order, the NURTW raised an alarm over threats by the defendants to embark on a strike action—a move the union describes as a deliberate attempt to undermine the court and disrupt its lawful activities.
Calling on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to step in, the union warned against actions capable of causing a breach of public peace within the state’s transport sector.
“We urge all parties concerned to respect the rule of law and allow the judicial process to run its course, rather than taking actions capable of disrupting the peace and lawful operations of the transport sector in Rivers State,” the statement read.
The NURTW Rumuola Unit assured members of the public of its commitment to maintaining order and resolving the matter strictly through constitutional and legal avenues.
