Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply on Wednesday following some of the heaviest military exchanges in weeks, deepening an ongoing regional standoff six months after the onset of the conflict.
President Donald Trump announced that American forces launched a “very heavy attack” on Iranian targets overnight, warning that the military remains “prepared to do another one any time we want.” The strikes followed earlier American action on Sunday, which Washington stated was conducted in response to Iranian attempts to plant sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz and missile strikes against a U.S. base in Jordan.
In response to U.S. bombardments, Iranian forces targeted U.S. military installations across Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region. Unclaimed attacks also struck two commercial oil tankers in the region, resulting in the deaths of two Filipino sailors.
Officials in Tehran warned of a shift in tactics. Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, stated on X that Tehran has adopted a “new strategy” across military, diplomatic, and economic fronts to counter Washington.
Outrage surged in Tehran following reports from the Iranian Red Crescent that a U.S. strike hit a wedding ceremony in southern Sirik, killing four civilians, including a child, and injuring over 50 others. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei characterized the strike as an “unlawful war of choice,” while senior negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf strongly denounced Washington’s actions.
Addressing the reported civilian casualties, U.S. Central Command spokesman Tim Hawkins refrained from commenting directly on the Sirik incident, stating that U.S. forces do not target non-combatants.
Concurrently, the Trump administration signaled an intensification of economic measures. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright confirmed plans to enforce “maximum pressure” through expanded sanctions against third-party nations and entities continuing economic partnerships with Tehran.
